    Chapter 01

    Before the door closes

I started in Miami, with champagne and pasta in the British Airways lounge before boarding. There was a moment of worry that the aircraft might be changed at the last minute. About 30 minutes later everything was fine.

    Chapter 02

    Seat 6G

On 14–15 February, Miami to Doha meant seat 6G. I closed the door, settled in and stopped thinking of this as just a seat. There was a flat bed when I wanted to sleep, dine on demand when I wanted to eat, and a Diptyque kit waiting for me.

I had booked a saver award. This suite and the second one home would use 85,000 Avios together, with about ₹26,000 in taxes. My Infinia points reached Qatar through Finnair Plus, not the less generous direct transfer.

    Chapter 03 · The proof

    The match. Live, up here.

Qatar’s own entertainment system carries live sport on Sport 24 and Sport 24 Extra, powered by Starlink. A QR code on the seat screen connects your own device, and that is how I watched India beat Pakistan live on my laptop while eating in my suite. The flight map on that screen read 37,008 ft.

    Chapter 04

Gold arrived two hours before my flight

At 23:52 Doha time on 15 February, Qatar’s “Welcome to Gold” email arrived. QR 1148 to Muscat was leaving at 01:50, just 1 hour 58 minutes later. My card said Gold until 14 February 2027, and Qatar’s email made the important bit explicit: Gold is matched to oneworld Sapphire.

Before that economy flight, I walked into Qatar’s Platinum and Gold lounge. The email promised lounge access “regardless of your class of travel”, priority check-in and boarding, an extra 20 kg or one extra piece, and four guest passes a year at Hamad.

Email arrived 23:52 Doha time. This screenshot was taken at 00:24.

The ALL × Qatar fast track

How I got oneworld Sapphire for 12 months for ₹11,453.

I already held ALL Platinum: 30 nights from ALL Accor+ Explorer, free with my Axis Burgundy Private card, and 30 more from stays and promotions. Platinum needs 60 status nights. Explorer alone gets you to ALL Gold, not Platinum.

    1. 01

      Start with the right status

ALL Platinum → Qatar Privilege Club Gold → oneworld Sapphire. ALL Gold only gets Qatar Silver, which is oneworld Ruby, not Sapphire.

    2. 02

      Link the accounts first

Link your ALL and Qatar Privilege Club accounts. Your first and last names must be identical on both.

    3. 03

      Take a paid Qatar flight

The first paid flight that Qatar Airways both markets and operates triggers the upgrade. Award tickets do not count. Mine was Doha to Muscat, a short paid Qatar hop: QAR 140 fare + QAR 300 taxes and fees = QAR 440.

    4. 04

      Let the automatic upgrade land

There is no form, fee or proof. Mine arrived about two hours before departure; other people have waited longer. Gold lasts 12 months and is once per account.

    Side-quest receipt

    • Doha → Muscat · QR 1148 · economy, paid: QAR 440 = ₹11,453 (QAR 140 fare + QAR 300 taxes and fees)
    • Muscat → Doha · QR 1127 · economy: 7,000 Avios + OMR 25.60
    • Result: oneworld Sapphire for 12 months

    Read before you copy this

You must already hold ALL Platinum, which needs 60 status nights. Qatar capped the 2026 fast track at 3,100 Gold upgrades and publishes no counter, so I cannot tell you whether places remain. No 2027 extension has been announced; this may not exist next year. Qatar can change or end it.

Once you hold Sapphire, lounge access works on any oneworld ticket, including economy. That does not make Al Mourjan a Sapphire lounge: it is only open to business ticket holders.

    Chapter 05

Muscat, 8 hours, economy ticket, Business Class lounge

QR 1148 took me from Doha to Muscat on an A330-300, in economy. My Sapphire status got me into the Oman Air Business Lounge. I could eat, rest and spend those eight hours somewhere comfortable without buying a business ticket.

At 12:35 on 16 February, QR 1127 took me back to Doha on an A350-1000. That economy ticket cost 7,000 Avios plus OMR 25.60, separate from the QSuites awards.

    Chapter 06

    Doha, the second time

Back in Doha, I had time for the garden, the art and a coffee. This time my onward ticket was business class, so I could use Al Mourjan. The sushi and spritz belonged to the business ticket, not the Gold status.

    Seat 8D

On 16–17 February, I was back behind a QSuites door, this time in seat 8D from Doha to Bangalore. Champagne, a starter, biryani and dessert followed. Two suites, with a small economy-ticket detour that left me with a year of Sapphire.

    Keep this part

    The playbook.
    In this order.

    1. Step 01

      Find the saver seat

On qatarairways.com choose ‘Use Avios’, search one-way in business class, and look for Saver or ‘Available’ dates. QSuites seats open roughly 361 days ahead. Check the seat map for the actual flight: not every Qatar flight has QSuites, and Qatar can swap the aircraft, or ‘getting QATARed’.

    2. Step 02

      Get Avios

I transferred HDFC Infinia points to Finnair Plus at 1:1, then moved Finnair Avios to Qatar Privilege Club. Finnair Avios are the same Avios currency. Direct Infinia to Qatar is only 2:1. Compare the card routes below, check the live ratio on your bank’s rewards page, and remember transfers are one way.

    3. Step 03

      Transfer and book

Open your Qatar Privilege Club account at least 30 days before you need it: Qatar and BA now block Avios transfers out of very new accounts. Since June 2026, Qatar’s ‘My List’ rule lets you redeem only for up to four nominated members, or via Family & Friends. Nominate people before booking for family.

    4. Step 04

      Pay the taxes and fly

Award taxes are paid in cash. Mine were about ₹26,000 for both QSuites flights combined. Cancelling an award costs US$25 more than 24 hours before departure and US$100 inside 24 hours. Check the rules at booking.

    The points calculation

    What is your seat worth?

    Your boarding pass

    ₹5,00,000₹2,00,000₹10,00,000

    Your number

    ₹5.58per Avios

5.58× what SmartBuy gives (₹1 per point)

(Your cash quote − taxes) ÷ Avios. This is your comparison, not the cash price of my trip.

    The honest part

    It is still an aeroplane.

    01

    The fit

QSuites is narrow if you are tall. A closing door does not change that.

    02

    The connection

Wi-Fi is not Starlink on every aircraft. This was my flight, not a fleet-wide promise.

    03

    The swap

Qatar can swap the aircraft and you can lose the suite door. Check the seat map, but leave room for that possibility.

And the award taxes are real cash. Points did not pay that ₹26,000.
